About Digital Journalism & Mass Communication Department

The Digital Journalism & Mass Communication Department equips students with skills to produce accurate, ethical, and engaging journalistic content across platforms. It covers news reporting, investigative journalism, multimedia storytelling, social media journalism, and crisis communication. Students also explore emerging trends like AI-powered journalism, blockchain for secure content distribution, and immersive storytelling through VR/AR, ensuring they stay ahead in the evolving media landscape.

  • Digital Storytelling & Multimedia Journalism: This sub-area focuses on crafting compelling stories using text, audio, video, and interactive elements. Students learn multimedia reporting, data-driven storytelling, mobile journalism (MoJo), and how to create immersive experiences through interactive features like clickable timelines and quizzes.
  • News Reporting & Investigative Journalism: Students master beat reporting, investigative techniques, and fact-checking to uncover hidden truths. They use tools like reverse image search and open-source intelligence (OSINT) to verify claims, protect whistleblowers, and produce credible, in-depth reports.
  • Broadcast & Video Journalism: This sub-area covers live reporting, video production, podcasting, and radio journalism. Students also explore virtual news anchoring and AI-driven tools for automated news delivery, ensuring they are skilled in both traditional and cutting-edge broadcast formats.
  • Social Media Journalism: Students learn platform-specific strategies for Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, focusing on real-time updates, viral content creation, and crowdsourcing information. Ethical considerations like consent and privacy are emphasized when sourcing content from social media.
  • Ethics, Law & Media Literacy: This sub-area addresses journalistic ethics, media law, censorship, and press freedom. Students also study AI ethics, misinformation, and media literacy to educate audiences on critically evaluating news sources and identifying bias.
  • Data Journalism & Computational Methods: Students collect, clean, and analyse datasets using tools like Python, R, and GIS software. They learn web scraping, geospatial journalism, and algorithmic accountability to tell impactful stories through data visualization and mapping.
  • Emerging Technologies in Journalism: This sub-area explores AI-powered journalism, blockchain for secure content distribution, VR/AR for immersive storytelling, and drone journalism. Students also experiment with voice-activated news systems and other futuristic innovations.
  • Global Journalism & Cross-Cultural Communication: Students cover international events, cross-cultural reporting, and conflict zone journalism. They develop sensitivity to cultural nuances, collaborate with global journalists, and explore diaspora media and transnational storytelling.
  • Citizen Journalism & Participatory Media: This sub-area focuses on user-generated content, crowdfunding journalism, and community engagement. Students learn to curate hyperlocal stories, involve audiences in participatory storytelling, and support independent media initiatives.
  • Media Entrepreneurship & Innovation: Students explore freelance journalism, subscription models, niche publications, and monetization strategies. They also learn to launch media startups and innovate in content delivery and audience engagement.
  • Crisis Communication & Public Relations: This sub-area prepares students to report on emergencies, create public service announcements, and manage reputations during crises. They also build strong media relations and leverage emergency alert systems for timely information dissemination.
  • Historical & Comparative Journalism: Students study the history of journalism, compare media systems across countries, and conduct archival research. They explore oral history projects and analyse the differences between legacy and new media.
  • Audience Analytics & Engagement: Students segment audiences, measure engagement metrics, and incorporate feedback into editorial decisions. They also explore gamification and personalization algorithms to enhance audience loyalty and content relevance.
  • Documentary Filmmaking & Long-Form Journalism: This sub-area focuses on feature writing, documentary production, serialized content, and exposé journalism. Students blend factual reporting with creative storytelling to produce impactful long-form narratives.
  • Future Trends in Journalism: Students explore metaverse journalism, synthetic media, quantum communication, space journalism, and neuro-journalism. They prepare for the transformative impact of emerging technologies on storytelling and audience interaction.
